Getting started
RiderMusic runs on your own home server, not on this showcase site. To use it in your car, you'll set up your own instance against your own Plex Media Server.
- Follow the setup guide on GitHub to install RiderMusic (Docker recommended) and point it at your Plex library.
- Expose it to the internet with a tunnel or reverse proxy — both your phone and your guests' phones need to reach it from outside your home network while you're driving.
- Log in at
/admin/login, then stay on the dashboard — that page is both your session control and your audio player. Pair it to your car stereo like any other audio app. - Print your dashboard sign from the admin dashboard — it's generated with your real QR code already on it, so there's nothing to configure. Tape it up in the car.
How a ride works
The first passenger to scan starts a session automatically — you don't have to do anything. If a second phone scans during an active ride, it joins that same session rather than starting a competing one. Sessions expire automatically after your configured timeout. Your only necessary action is the End Session button on the dashboard, and only if a passenger is dropped off early.
FAQ
Does a guest need to install anything?
No. Scanning the QR code lands them on a mobile web page — no app, no account, no login.
Does RiderMusic need Plexamp?
No. The driver's phone streams audio directly from Plex Media Server's own API. Plexamp isn't part of the architecture.
Can a guest see my Plex credentials?
No. Only your RiderMusic backend holds the real Plex token — guests and the driver's player page never see it.
Where do I get the QR code to print?
Your admin dashboard generates a print-ready sign with your real QR code already on it — no separate tool or manual setup. Print it, or save it as a PDF straight from the browser's print dialog.
What if the old QR code photo gets shared later?
It's harmless. The printed code never carries access itself — only a doorway that mints a brand-new session on every scan.
